Procedure of Selecting the Right Study Program

Norway offers plenty of courses and degree choices. Choosing between multiple options available is a difficult job.  Apposite research, planning and the right timing and advice, can land you in the institution and the course of your choice.

Before applying, make sure about the course and university you want to get into. Following pointers that should be followed before applying:
  • Determine your objective: Determine your aims and goals. Decide about the course and the university you want to go to. Identify the scope of possibility academically.

  • Research about the required course and the college you desire to apply to: Research the course, colleges and check the online course brochure for information such as, special requirements and eligibility. Also, jot down the colleges that offer the course that you want to take on.
Select your program and study mode:
  • Select your program and location (e.g. bachelor, postgraduate, Doctoral)
  • Decide on the study mode
  • Check availability of the course according to your preferred study location
  • Check entry requirements

Academic Requirements

The academic requirements, including evidence of English and Norwegian language skills will vary depending on the level of education in Norway. Institutions can have different entry requirements, so read the course information on their website carefully and contact them.

Entry requirements for the different levels of study:
  • Undergraduate studies (first cycle): Bachelor To make entry into a Norway undergraduate course you will need to hold Upper Secondary Certificate of Education (Year 12), or the overseas equivalent. Some undergraduate courses may also have specific pre-requisite subjects.

  • Master's studies (second cycle): Masters If you are applying for a master's program at an institution in Norway, you are required to hold a relevant bachelor's or equivalent degree diploma.

  • Doctoral studies (third cycle): Doctoral For applying to doctoral studies at an institution in Norway, you are required to hold a master's degree or a corresponding degree from a professional training institution such as a school of Psychology, Dentistry, Medicine or Law.

English Proficiency:

  • IELTS: IELTS IELTS or International English Language Test. Most universities require international students to take this test.

  • TOEFL: TOEFL TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language is an alternative to IELTS

Norwegian Proficiency

For courses where the language of instruction is Norwegian, proficiency in the Norwegian language is mandatory. The Norwegian language is the foremost language of instruction at Norwegian institutions of higher education.
  • Bergenstesten: Norwegian Test The applicant shall pass test in Norwegian at higher level, 'Bergenstesten' (Advanced level), with a minimum score of 450.    The international students must undertake One Year Programme in Norwegian Language and Civilization.

  • Check if you are eligible for credit and scholarship programs: The credit policy and scholarship programs differ for every University and Course. So, research about the same and apply.

  • Check the affiliation of the Institution: Check whether the college meets a minimal set of standards or not. Visit their respective websites and know more about the affiliation/accreditation.  It is important to be sure that the colleges to which you are applying are accredited by a recognized accrediting authority.

  • Read Student visa information clearly and also, check the closing dates for the course.

  • Look over the number of International Students on Campus: If there are many international students on campus, the institution is more likely to be responsive to the needs of students from other countries.
